Natural Baby Bath

Bathing a baby is a bonding opportunity, but don’t jump the gun. Babies do not need a bath everyday when they are young. In fact most pediatricians recommend a sponge bath only until the umbilical stump falls off. When you are ready to give the baby a “real” bath; you can use the sink, a baby tub, or even a large bucket. We have a picture of my brother when he was a baby in my grandmother’s big bowl from her bowl and pitcher set.

When bathing a baby, you will want to use a rhythmic approach and gently wash all the little creases and folds of skin. The neck, armpits and behind the ears typically collect milk and dust, so pay particular attention to those areas. Go slowly the first time. Some babies take a bit of time to get used to the water. Just make sure it's warm enough and ease them gently into the tub. Some babies are less anxious being bathed in the tub with the mother. Fill the tub only to hip depth and have some else hand the baby to you once you’re in the tub. Your body will form a natural support. Some mothers nurse the baby in the tub if they are fussy. It can be a relaxing experience for both of you.

Once bath time is over, wrap the baby in a terry towel and pat dry. You may want to apply a natural lotion or a layer of almond or olive oil as a moisturizer. The hooded towels are very nice and they always seem to be a popular baby gift. If they get used to the bath when they are young, it will be much easier when they are older and more mobile so make their first experience a pleasant one.

It’s easy to find natural baby bath products. There are lots to choose from. Some are made by small companies while others are produced by industry mainstays like Johnson & Johnson or Bert’s Bees. Most will have bar soap, liquid cleansers and lotions or creams for after bath.
