Natural Baby Skin Care

Babies come into the world red, wrinkled, and with a protective coating on their skin. This usually peels off during the first week and there is no need to apply creams to hasten the process. A newborns skin is delicate and so is the immune system; so less is more. Natural baby skin care experts suggest you need only use warm water to bathe a baby initially. Products with fragrances and artificial chemical ingredients may upset the natural balance of the skin and cause rashes and eczema. This is especially true if you have a family history of allergies and skin problems.

It may be hard but resist the urge to bathe the baby too frequently. They really dont get very dirty with the exception of drooling and diaper changes so a full bath usually isnt necessary more than two or three times weekly. You can clean their mouths and bottoms as needed in between baths. Newborns with darker skin are especially prone to dry skin, so sponge baths are recommended for the first month.

Most skin problems that newborns have dont usually develop in the first month or two of life. Eczema is a red itchy rash that may appear on the scalp, face, elbows, and knees. Try to limit bathing to once a week and avoid excessive use of baby products. Check with your pediatrician about the best way to treat this. Some diaper rash is actually eczema and may be caused by dyes in diapers. You may want to switch to a dye free diaper to prevent further outbreaks.

Diaper rash can be prevented by frequent diaper changes. Wash with mild cleansers and pat dry. If the area is very irritated, use a squirt bottle to avoid rubbing the skin. Avoid using baby powder and apply a protective coating of a product like Desitin or A&D ointment. If diaper rash persists more than a few days, check with your pediatrician. If the rash is caused by eczema, bacterial or yeast infection; you may need a prescription product.

We have all heard how touch is very important to the development of a newborn. You may want to try giving your baby a gentle massage with a mild lotion or baby oil while talking or singing to him. Studies suggest that massage stimulates the immune system and results in a calmer baby who sleeps well. Who would not be happy about that? If you follow a few simple rules about natural baby skin care, you will give your baby a great start to a lifetime a healthy skin.
