Natural Baby Soap

Every parent wants the best for their baby. It seems like every time you turn around, some ingredient or another in all kinds of products turns out to be hazardous in some way. We don’t use lye soap anymore, so why would you want to bathe a baby in some kind of soap that is harsh and drying to the skin. Even Ivory soap has been shown to be very drying. When we were babies my mother used castile soap as my grandmother did before her. There is good news though. There are lots of sources for natural baby soap.

Sodium Laurel Sulfate sounds harmless enough. It has a flower in its name, but it is the ingredient that gives soaps and shampoos their ability to foam. Unfortunately it is a known skin irritant that can penetrate and be retained in the eyes, brain, heart and liver. Used in a baby soap or shampoo, it can cause rashes, eczema, and other skin irritations. It is sometimes labeled as natural because it is derived from coconut oil, but don’t be fooled. This is too harsh for your baby’s skin.

Synthetic perfumes and fragrances can contain hundreds of chemicals that may cause headaches, dizziness, coughing, vomiting, and skin irritations. You may have noticed talc free powders on the market. Talc is a mineral that has been used in baby powder, but long term effects can be as irritating as asbestos.

Don’t worry; manufacturers of baby soaps hear you and are addressing the concerns of a growing number of parents who want natural baby soap and other products that are free of these dangerous ingredients. There are many small independent companies that sell natural and organic baby soaps online. Even the giant Johnson and Johnson company has taken notice and introduced Johnson’s Natural; a line of natural baby soaps and other products that are 98% naturally derived. Burt’s Bees has a Baby Bee Buttermilk Soap that is free of harmful ingredients and made with buttermilk, oat flour, honey, and glycerin. Pretty Baby is another company featuring natural baby soaps made with 100% olive oil, shea butter, or goat’s milk. They come in unfragranced varieties as well. If fragrance is used; it is lavender, chamomile, or sandalwood. Sometimes you just have to get back to basics and use products that are free of chemicals and additives. Your grandmother raised her children without chemicals and so can you.
