Natural Newborn

Having a baby is an exciting time in your life. If you have decided to raise your baby naturally, there are a few things consider. If you choose to give birth at home attended by a midwife; you have more control over what happens immediately after birth. For some mothers this is not an option so if you plant to give birth in a hospital there are some things that are routinely done after birth that you can choose not to do. Most hospitals are not going to have organic products for a natural newborn so when you are packing your bag, pack one for the baby with any organic products that you want to use. You will want to bring, clothing, blankets, and diapers at least.

The doctor or midwife can easily perform an APGAR assessment while the baby is with you. APGAR stands for activity, pulse, grimace, appearance and respiration. It is usually checked at one minute and five minutes after birth. Cutting the cord as soon as the baby emerges is not necessary unless it wrapped around the neck. You are free to request that the cord not be cut until it stops pulsing. The last few minutes of highly oxygenated blood will be beneficial to the baby. In fact it provides nearly a month’s supply of iron. The baby may be covered in a creamy white substance called vernix and it can be rubbed into the skin like natural body butter.

There are a few routine but not required procedures done after birth. In most cases you can decline or delay these things. Most babies have an antibiotic eye cream applied to prevent infection. It is the law in some states and if that is the case, ask that it be delayed for an hour. Vitamin K injections are also given routinely, but you can request that it be given orally. Hepatitis B vaccines are often given. Research this carefully before you give birth. You may want to decline or delay this vaccine. Circumcision is another hot topic right now. There is no medical reason to do it and newborns do feel pain. If you choose circumcision for religious or cultural reasons, it is best to do it around eight days after birth. At that time the baby’s production of vitamin K will have begun. Ask that a specialist do the procedure and insist on pain control for the baby.

This is your child and you have the right to have things done the way you want them done for your natural newborn. Take your organic supplies to the hospital with you and insist on getting the treatment you want for your child to give it a healthy start in life.
