Babies spend much of their first year or so in a crib and most mattresses are made from polyurethane foam. Babies with allergies and chemical sensitivity can react badly to the chemical in the foam. It may cause coughing, respiratory problems, headaches, vomiting, and irregular heartbeat. You may want to consider using organic bedding, starting with the mattress. Organic mattress pads will further help to protect the baby’s immune system.

As little as ten years ago finding organic bedding was next to impossible, but today people are much more concerned with health and wellness. You can easily find organic bedding for your baby online, in baby shops, and even at stores like Target. Most people today are interested in finding effective, natural, and eco-friendly products for their children and for use in their own everyday life.

Some mattress pads are advertised as natural or organic and waterproof. These generally have organic cotton padding, polyester filling and a polyurethane protective layer. The polyurethane layer is described as being lead and phthalate free, but if you want to avoid plastics at all costs; you might prefer to use the organic cotton or wool mattress pads accompanied by a puddle pad.

Organic mattress pads are available for cribs as well as travel beds and bassinets. People often purchase all their bedding at once, so finding the proper size should be easy. Even adults suffer from allergies due to dust mites and chemicals, so why not protect your baby from the start?
